It always seems to become a political statement these days when someone says: “I am European.” Well, I’m probably not in that sense. Europe as it is today, and as a cultural-political space, is no longer my homeland. But if this means that the landscape of Europe and its architecture are the places where I feel at home, in a sense of aesthetic affinity with the history of the continent; if this also refers to a very special, native affinity with the languages and literatures, albeit those of the distant past – yes, then I can say: I am European…
